The Center for the Analysis of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL) is a College of Arts and Science teaching and research center affiliated with the Departments of Anthropology and Geography. CASEL welcomes faculty and students from across the IUB Campus. Founded in 2015, CASEL builds on the legacy of the Anthropological Center for Training and Research Global Environmental Change (ACT), the first research center in the country dedicated to research and teaching on the human dimensions of global environmental change. CASEL researchers focus broadly on human-environment interaction, linking in depth, local scale field research, ethnographic and social survey methods, and ecological and hydrological work with geospatial analysis from local to global scales. We foster a holistic perspective across temporal and spatial scales, bringing together students and faculty from multiple areas of expertise to advance interdisciplinary research on social ecological systems, sustainability, and environmental governance. The lab is also a teaching space for graduate and undergraduate classes and a shared space to write, map, analyze, and collaborate, a place to test ideas, learn methods, and move projects forward in conversation with others.

Under the auspices of the Department of Geography and Department of Anthropology in the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences, CASEL provides a collaborative research and training environment for faculty, visiting scholars, and graduate and undergraduate students.

Our laboratory has 15 workstations used for formal university classes in GIS, remote sensing, human-environment interaction, and archeology, as well as for more individualized training. Previous classes offered in CASEL include: GEOG-G 440/540 Urban Climate, GEOG-G 336/535 Environmental Remote Sensing, and ANTH-E 527 Environmental Anthropology.
