Join us at CASEL on Friday, September 20 at noon for a talk by doctoral student Sacha Siani (Geography and CASEL) and discussion.
Amazon on fire
Fire is a common element in the rural landscape of the Brazilian Amazon. In 2019, satellites recorded a 53% increase in fire occurrence compared to 2018. The current fire outbreak in the Brazilian Amazon is the largest since 2010. In a context of marked political polarization, much of the debate is around whether the observed growth is caused by the new government's choices and discourse, or if it is a "natural" phenomenon in the region. The purpose of this talk is to describe the use of fire in the Brazilian Amazon and discuss aspects underlying current rise.
