If you missed his presentation for CASEL last Friday, here's another opportunity to see "Amazon on fire" by doctoral student Sacha Siani (Geography and CASEL). Siani will present his talk to the IU Brazilian Student Association at 3pm on Friday, September 27.
Amazon on fire
Fire is a common element in the rural landscape of the Brazilian Amazon. In 2019, satellites recorded a 53% increase in fire occurrence compared to 2018. The current fire outbreak in the Brazilian Amazon is the largest since 2010. In a context of marked political polarization, much of the debate is around whether the observed growth is caused by the new government's choices and discourse, or if it is a "natural" phenomenon in the region. The purpose of this talk is to describe the use of fire in the Brazilian Amazon and discuss aspects underlying current rise.
